Postmenopausal Bleeding

When a woman is in her postmenopausal years, she should not have vaginal bleeding. If this occurs, evaluation is recommended. The answer could simply be thinning of the vaginal tissues from decreased estrogen levels, but could also represent tissue growth inside the uterus such as polyps, precancerous tissue, or uterine cancer. Often, treatment may just include medication, but at times minor outpatient surgical intervention is needed. Rarely is hysterectomy or more extensive treatment warranted.
